Brittle Stars

Hey everyone!

I haven't had anytime to upload this blog recently and for that I am sorry. I have moved from Western Massachusetts to Providence, Rhode Island. I went to college here and its really great to be back in time for Thanksgiving to be around my friends. I have my own place and I've got to get a job soon as well!

So despite all this I've decided to spend more time updating this blog. I'm also happy to announce I am dropping my third server, Mediafire, in place of the new www.Divshare.com. You'll notice it's much better, and you can now listen to songs even before downloading them! I'm also hoping my files won't disappear!

Anyway, I'm writing this time about a band I've gotten into called Brittle Stars. Coming from Gainesville, FL, Brittle Stars' name alone sheds light onto their sound and the musicians behind it; something terribly beautiful but incredibly delicate. The songs Brittle Stars make are often filled with feelings of hurt, disappointment and bitter sweet romance, yet never come off as being too wrapped up in its own sentimentality.

In 1999 the band released their self titled album on Shelflife records. The music is purely indie pop, with jangling guitars, synth riffs that never feel out of place and beautiful singing by keyboardist Estelle. The band has since broken up and singer Estelle has hence moved to Israel then to New York City where she is one half of the band Elephant Parade.

There is also a rumor floating around that Brittle Stars could be getting together for a reunion in May of 2008!

p.s. I found this photo of Estelle in New York! Isn't it nice? See ya soon.

I just found out about them a few weeks ago and am amazed at the sheer beauty of these songs. I'm a big fan of the Cranes, Camera Obscura, Ladytron, O.M.D., and New Order. Brittle Stars is a nice blend of sounds from those bands, and pretty much every song is great. I can't believe the two albums are out of print on CD... As I write this, there's two more copies of the first one on Amazon sellers (where I got mine), but Garage Sale is impossible to find. I just emailed info@shelflife.com and requested they get these back in print. It's ironic that on Shelflife's "about" page, that they have a pic of the first album, but it's out of print... A few web shops say they can get it special order, most from Caroline distribution, but Caroline's search doesn't bring them up. I have a copy on order, but I'm expecting them to come back and say it's not available. Emusic has the MP3s in decent quality (where I got Garage Sale), but I'm an audiophile and really want the CD. I listen on Magneplanar 3.6R speakers and their music is just fantastic on them. If they do the reunion show, I'll be there (Gainesville is only 90 miles from my house :)

I would love to get my hands on the second cd, as I only have a few downloads (the ones on last.fm, etc) I really want to have Scott Schultz's remix of Tripping Me Up. Its so amazing. Anyway, let's hope shelflift reprints some Majestic albums too. Honestly.

Thanks for the kind words. There's a "Complete Recordings" CD in the works, but with no remixes. If you really want em, I could send you some FLACs or something. The reunion show is also a go!
